I am a native Spanish-speaker and an independent language specialist. My services include translation, interpretation, editing and language instruction. My areas of interest are biology, nature, travel, culture and religion.
I have been a part-time Spanish and Marshallese translator since July 2009 until the present. During that time, I have lived in Las Vegas, NV and in three different cities in Utah. Working as a freelancer gives me the flexibility to work on interesting projects. I’ve worked on projects regarding health and social issues affecting the Marshall Islands and Latin America, projects having to do with government services for Marshallese immigrants in the United States, and projects concerning environmental issues.
Spanish Language and Localization Specialist
I have been in charge of Spanish localization at Priority Dispatch Corp. since June 2014. I translate updates to the emergency response software that the company produces as well as support products such as user manuals, training manuals, exams, periodicals, and website. I work closely with a team of production artists and proofreaders to localize the software and products for use by Spanish speakers in the United States and in Latin America.
Student Advocacy and Access Specialist
I was in charge of parent centers and volunteer programs at two schools in Canyons School District for the 2013–2014 school year. My responsibilities included translating elementary school documents and teacher-parent communications. I occasionally did consecutive interpretation at school events and taught English as a second language to adults, and supporting parent participation in school programs.
Marshallese Language Instructor
From August 2012 to August 2013 I taught Marshallese at the Missionary Training Center, which is where LDS (Mormon) missionaries are trained for ecclesiastical service (such as proselyting) in the US and abroad. My responsibilities included teaching students in daily language and culture instruction and training them on individual communication, problem solving, and strategy skills.
Marshallese Language Material Developer
I worked in the team that helped develop the materials that are used to teach Marshallese in the Missionary Training Center. The final products were a vocabulary-building software and a manual that teaches sentence structures using patterns. My job was to edit the audio and text of the software, and to identify basic sentence structures and display them in the manual.
As part of the TESOL program at BYU, I worked at the English Language Center for a semester, first as a tutor and then as a teacher. As a tutor, I helped lead weekly discussion groups and English learning activities. I also tutored five adult students weekly on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, or a variety of strategies to help them learn to maximize their language development. In the second half of the semester, I taught a beginning grammar class to nine adults. My students came from Brazil, China, Korea, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia.
My first job as an adult was as a landscape specialist at BYU’s off campus pruning crew. I worked there from May 2010 to August 2012 and I include it here because it was the job that allowed me to pay for college, and the friendships and experiences I made there continue to shape my life today. My responsibilities in this job included beautifying grounds through maintenance of shrubs, espalier, and ground cover on 500+ acre campus. We were also on call for snow removal in the winter and we helped in stadium events such as football games.
